The Website Took Ozempic
A part of these “Intermissions” are a series of production lifts that must happen, in phases. I started this comic, with virtually no plan on May 25 of last year. My first intermission was meant to build the buffer out, I sort of failed miserably on that because I ended up constructing large parts of the OuterNet during those phases. The main Hobart website got neglected the further we went. I began to get complaints of slow loading times, no way to zoom, and a pretty poor experience on mobile. The more comics I would add, the more nervous I became, because I knew that if I didn’t do something with the website now, it would become much harder down the road.
The old website is still here, but it just needed a few doses of semaglutide.
Some things that have changed
- All the structural stuff from the old site has been preserved – so links, comic pages, etc. are all still in the same location.
- There is now a zoom feature that has been long threatened that if I didn’t add it, Stevie would be kidnapped and held for a ransom that I could not possibly pay, even with a GoFundMe.
- Keyboard arrow navigation – yay!
- Blog post preview underneath the comic – may get rid of the excerpt and make it smaller.
- Buffer counter / production status is now in the footer and will be updated regularly.
- Announcements will now be more visible and apparent.
- Story arcs are now defined, canonized, and listed in a drop down below the comic nav, as well as on the Episode Archive page.
- We have moved to a server where RSS will actually work, theoretically.
- Various style enhancements which I am super picky about and still working on
- Social icons have now been moved to the footer instead of jammed into the navigation, thank you very much
I have more features planned, but nothing that would bloat the site or annoy you. Mostly just fixes, cleanup, optimizations, and of course whatever shenanigans with websites that I usually get up to.
With that being said, I have been working on facelifts for the Hobart Herald, too! There are some major UX issues over there.
